Democratic Pollster Douglas Schoen decided to poll the Occupy Wall Street crowd to get their views. The results? A group of engaged (52% have participated in some political movement)progressives (65% say government has a moral responsibility to provide health care, college education and retirement regardless of cost), disillusioned with capitalism and having a distinct activist orientation (98% advocate civil disobedience and 31% outright violence). Only 21% of the nation self-identifies as liberal. According to the progressive Center for American Progress in a 2009 study showed only 16% of people self-identify as progressives (which they somehow manage to make into 47% of the nation being liberal or progressive).
So the supposed "99%" seems to be more likely close to identifying ideologically with, to be generous, something like 2% of the population.
